Author
Paul Dykewicz, (DIE ka wits), is the author of “Holy Smokes! Golden Guidance from Notre Dame’s
Championship Chaplain,” www.holysmokesbook.com, a book that features the life, wisdom and humor of
the university’s late sports chaplain who also headed discipline during the Vietnam War and once stopped
protestors from burning down a campus building. Each chapter of the book features a different way to
improve your life as if this priest, who guided more than four decades of Notre Dame student-athletes,
coaches and others, as a source of personalized counseling. Respected Catholic football coach Lou Holtz
provided the book’s powerful Foreword and shared a number of his favorite stories about Fr. James
Riehle, (REAL’ he) who won four national football titles with three different coaches.

Fr. Riehle, who worked successfully in sales before becoming a priest at age 39, became known for
giving great counsel to help people overcome adversity to succeed on and off the playing field. The
university's late President Theodore Hesburgh eulogized Fr. Riehle at the chaplain’s 2008 funeral Mass as
"one of the great ones at Notre Dame in a quiet way.

Fr. Riehle appeared in the movie Rudy and said the "Hail Mary" prayer before the walk-on team member played his only game. Fr. Riehle also was the priest in an Adidas television commercial with Joe Montana
that aired many years ago. When asked how he felt about a member of the clergy offering the punch line,
the four-time Super Bowl winner replied, "Don't they always?"
Many of the stories in the book will blow you away and have not been reported elsewhere. Paul received
endorsements and stories from Montana, Joe Theismann, & Reggie Brooks.

Phelps, Ara Parseghian, Dick Vitale, Notre Dame’s current basketball coach Mike Brey and many others.
Fr. Riehle’s niece, Sr. Mary Angela (Brucksch), is a Carmelite nun in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He once
told his doctor after not feeling well that he was among such holiness when he visited the nuns that his
system probably couldn't stand it. An entire chapter is devoted to the value of sharing a sense of humor.
Paul also is a seasoned, Washington-based columnist, editor and commentator who has written about
many topics, including protecting freedom of religion, defending against religious persecution and ways
to address poverty effectively. He has written for The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Dow Jones,
Investor’s Business Daily and other major news organizations. Paul and his inspirational book have been
featured on ETWN Radio and Television, KDOW in San Francisco and KNUS in Denver.
